Palliative Care & Hospice Care – What Are the Differences?

Palliative and hospice care are two types of healthcare that aim to enhance patients' quality of life. Palliative care focuses on managing treatment and other needs while maintaining the highest possible quality of life. This type of care is available for anyone living with a serious illness and can be received while receiving curative and therapeutic care. 


Hospice care, on the other hand, is specifically for patients who have a life expectancy of fewer than six months. Hospice care focuses on pain and symptom management, emotional support, medication and medical supplies, and grief support. It may also include special services such as speech and physical therapy when needed. Hospice care, including nursing and long-term care facilities, can be provided wherever the patient lives.

Palliative care is typically provided by a specially trained team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare specialists. In contrast, hospice care is provided by a team that focuses on the patient's needs. Medicare, Medicaid, and many insurance plans can cover palliative and hospice care. Palliative care can be provided for as long as it is needed, while hospice care can be initiated and continued as long as the patient's doctor believes they are likely to have fewer than six months to live.
